So that's that. The site of the buildings that had become a "nationwide symbol for the failure of public housing" will be occupied by a big red bullseye, a symbol of American consumerism.
Target Purchases Former Cabrini-Green Site
Avoid the Target/WalMart Crush: Shop Local
The Chicago City Council declared Nov. 25 - Dec. 4 "Buy Local First Week."
Target Aims for Cabrini-Green Store
Target and the Chicago Housing Authority are in talks to do a land swap which, if it goes through, would give the retail giant five acres of land where the William Green homes portion of Cabrini-Green once stood. In exchange, Target would give CHA land of equal value so they can build homes in the same area.
It's Official: Target Comes to State Street
After months of reports and speculation, Target has finally signed a lease to occupy the former Carson Pirie Scott building, giving State Street another retail anchor.
Activists To Protest Target In Uptown Tomorrow
Though a few weeks have already passed since news first spread of Target's controversial $150,000 donation to MN Forward, a pro-business group that also happens to support anti-gay Minn. gubernatorial candidate Tom Emmer, the calls for a boycott from LGBT and other groups are still going strong. Tomorrow, as part of a national day of protest against the retail giant, activists in Chicago have planned a demonstration at the newly opened Wilson Yard location in Uptown at 11 a.m.
LGBT Groups Take Aim at Target
The PR hits just keep coming for Target. The Minn.-based, growing retail empire is already under fire for donating $150,000 to a PAC backing Tom Emmer, an anti-gay Republican gubernatorial candidate in the land of 10,000 lakes who reportedly has ties to a Christian rock group advocating the murder of LGBT people. And, as reported by The Awl yesterday, the company's CEO Gregg Steinhafel and his wife are also on the record for donating $10,000, the maximum allowable contribution, to Rep. Michele Bachmann.
Sustainable Seafood: Target Success, Jewel Fail
Worried about sustainable seafood and where to buy it? Greenpeace has just released it's most recent report, "Carting Away the Ocean," on grocery stores and their efforts (or lack thereof) to ensure the existence of tasty fish for the next generation. Last year, the big loser was Trader Joe's. TJ's sold so many types of fish on the "Red List" of threatened species that Greenpeace branded them "Traitor Joe's" and started a parody website. It worked - Trader Joe's agreed to change it's buying practices.
Bargain Hunting Website Exposes Black Friday Sales For Target (And Other Stores)
Back in the day, it was customary to buy the newspaper right around Thanksgiving and check out all the ads and circulars to see which store had the best Black Friday deal. But now things are a bit easier, thanks to bargain-hunting website gotadeal.com, a site that specializes in bringing consumers the newest and cheapest deals from major chain stores such as Target, Best Buy, and Walmart, among others.
Buying Power of The South Side Overlooked
During an interview with Chicago Public Radio, North Kenwood resident Lauren McCadney says she chose to live in the South Side neighborhood because of its parks and affordability - but to shop for groceries or other household items, she has to get in her car and make a “destination trip” to a Dominick’s or Target. McCadney says she spends between $500-$700 a month for groceries, dining out, and trips to Target, money spent outside her community which she believes could ultimately support the business.
Santa Claus is Coming to Already in Town
Thanksgiving falls later this year, creating fewer shopping days, so the mall wants to give consumers ample time to, well, consume, said Bonni Pear, a Woodfield spokeswoman.Makes perfect sense to us. Thanks to reader Katie Scully, we have proof that Target beat them all to the punch, after the jump.
