Derrion Albert, 16, was beaten to death in the midst of violent brawl yesterday afternoon. The brawl occurred yesterday afternoon around 3 p.m. near 111th and Wallace in Roseland. According to the Tribune:

The death of a tenth-grade Chicago Public School student on the Southwest Side Saturday afternoon raises the number of students killed this school year to 35, surpassing the 26 students who died last year.

• Joey "The Clown" Lombardo is the latest mobster sentenced in the Family Secrets trial: Joey received life.
• Uriel Soto-Castro, the man who hit three teens with his car on Friday, is facing aggravated drunken driving charges from the incident; none of the teens' injuries were considered life-threatening.
• The Sun-Times uncovered some rather disproportionately high salaries for some area educators.

A new study from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety says states should raise the age at which teens can get drivers licenses to 17 or 18. The report says higher licensing age "would save lives."

With the 12th Street Beach just south of Northerly Island, it has become a hot spot to listen to the music coming from the Charter One Pavilion. As many as 1,000 teens might gather on any given evening. But after about a half-dozen fights broke out amongst the crowd Thursday evening, police are now saying they will shut down the beach if further trouble erupts.

Well, if they were anything like us as adolescents, they're in the basement drinking Boone's Farm and watching Star Wars for the 356th time. But seriously, they really should be at home. We mentioned back in January that Mayor Daley wanted to push back curfews for youth, ages 17 and under. As of this weekend, Mr. Mayor gets his wish.
