The Morning After: Bulls Win Streak Hits Four

The Morning After: Bulls Win Streak Hits Four

Who would have thought the Bulls would come away from a four game stretch against Phoenix, Houston, San Antonio, and Oklahoma City at 4-0? Not us, but we're happy to be wrong. The Bulls thumped the Thunder 96-86 to win their fourth straight game - all on the road - and move back to .500 for the first time since mid-November. Derrick Rose led the way with 26 points and 7 assists, Luol Deng added 17, and Brad Miller scored 14 off the bench. Even Rose admitted mild surprise at the current winning streak: "Yeah I don't think anyone would have thought we'd have a four-game winning streak going after playing in the places we have the last few days. We're definitely confident right now and hopefully we can keep it going." The Bulls hope to keep it going as they wrap up the road trip tomorrow night in New Orleans against the Hornets (7 p.m., CSN). more ›

Morning Box Score: OKC Rumbles Past Bulls

Morning Box Score: OKC Rumbles Past Bulls

The Bulls managed to keep Kevin Durant largely in check but the Oklahoma City Thunder still managed to rumble past the Bulls by a 98-85 final. All five Bulls starters scored in double-figures - led by Derrick Rose who had 19 and double-doubles from Luol Deng (15-10) and Joakim Noah (14-14) - but none broke 20 points. The Bulls actually led at the half but squandered that lead in a poor third quarter. Overall, the Bulls shot a pretty abysmal 35.4 percent from the field, not helping their cause. There's no rest, either, as they're in Charlotte tonight to face the Bobcats, (6 p.m., CSN). more ›

Thunderstruck!

Ah, Spring! You've finally arrived and you've brought nature's light show with you. Reader Ryan B. wrote to us late last night: "I just witnessed the Sears Tower being struck by lighting five times. All five on the west antenna. The light on top of the antenna was taken out on the first strike. I could see three or four sparks from each lightning strike." And Flickr pool contributor stephenwrainey gives us this pair of gorgeous shot as visual accompaniment. more ›

Fastpitch Comes to Elgin

The Chicago Bandits, our National Pro Fastpitch franchise, recently announced they are moving their from Lisle to Elgin. For the next three years the team will call Judson University their home. The university is making enhancements to a stadium to allow seating for 2,000, and the city of Elgin is considering building a stadium for the Bandits that could be ready by 2011. Two of the six teams in the National Pro Fastpitch league will... more ›

Monday Missed Connections: You Can't Always Get What You Want

Monday Missed Connections: You Can't Always Get What You Want

What a hilarious week to be a Missed Connection. Just when we think things are starting to grow tamer on Craigslist, we're struck with a Desperate Housewives-style fantasy about Juan the door-repair guy. Behold (the parts we don't feel dirty repeating): I know we've only met a couple of times briefly but I just have to be honest. ... On the bed, on the couch, in the shower, on the floor ... I just can't... more ›

For The Love Of The Dirty

For The Love Of The Dirty

We all still love rocknroll...right? We’re still recovering from all that Lollapalooza coverage over here at Chicagoist HQ, but that doesn’t mean we’re too tuckered to tie into an old skool, roll-on-the-floor-in-stale-beer sort of show this weekend. The Gallery Cabaret in Bucktown will play host to the inaugural edition of Do You Still Love Rock ‘N’ Roll?, an eleven-band, all night filth affair of rock for the love of rock. Starting at 7pm and costing... more ›

This Party's Got the Internet Goin' Nuts

This Party's Got the Internet Goin' Nuts

By now the holiday hangovers should have subsided, and you're figuring out how to once again ruin your liver and make some bad decisions. If that's the case, we have one suggestion: go to Debonair Social Club tonight. The main attraction is Wisconson-based white-boy rapper Juiceboxxx, a dude who sounds like a Casio keyboard version of Spank Rock, with more of a "everybody jump and sweat" message. One can only hope he plays ALL FOUR... more ›

One Last Reminder!

One Last Reminder!

It's our 3rd Anniversary Party at Subterranean tonight! We are very, VERY excited to finally be past our twos! Two Days Away! Now with Cheap Beer!

Just a quick reminder ... we're celebrating our 3rd Anniversary with and 18 and over show at Subterranean this Thursday. We've lined up the musical talents of Milk At Midnight, Sweetish, and We Make Thunder to get your toes tapping with tunes catchier than a cross-continental tour of TB. And we've got The Hood Internet DJs STV SLV and ABX spinning until the wee hours of the morning. And we'll have the staff of Chicagoist... more ›

One! More! Week!

One! More! Week!

That's right, the Chicagoist 3rd Anniversary Party is only one week away! We already know you're planning on attending our 18 and over show at Subterranean next Thursday, right? Who would want to miss live sets from Milk At Midnight, Sweetish, and We Make Thunder? Who wouldn't want to get their dance on to the live debut of The Hood Internet DJs? The Hood Internet Grows More Famous, Helps Us Celebrate our Birthday

The Hood Internet Grows More Famous, Helps Us Celebrate our Birthday

We couldn't help but notice that The Hood Internet boys just continue to collect accolades tumbling their way. Pitchfork loves them. Very Short List digs 'em. USA Today grooves to them. Heck, even the CBC is singing their praises! The art of the mash-up has been largely on the wane over the past year or so, but these wild upstarts from the mean streets of Chicago have injected brand new life into the art form... more ›

We're Finally Moving out of Our Terrible Twos!

We're Finally Moving out of Our Terrible Twos!

We’re getting another year older. In fact, if you measure our age in dog years, we’re about to celebrate our 21st birthday! Yee-haw! In plain old human years, we’re turning three, even though it seems like only yesterday that the city that never sleeps met the Windy City. Chicago has been good to us, showing us good times, and providing us with killer content, but the best part about being Chicagoist is knowing we have... more ›

Roller Derby and Beer

Roller Derby and Beer

Chicagoist admits to being intrigued by the All Women's Roller Derby Leagues here in Chicago. We have written about both the Windy City Rollers and the Chi*Town Sirens. What Chicagoist really likes is when you pair the action of Roller Derby with a visit to your local pub. That is what the Chi*Town Sirens are doing this season. On Thursday night from 6:30 to 9:30 roller-derby fans can meet the women of the Killopatras and... more ›

I'm a Monster!!

I'm a Monster!!

Did you know that there are 57 different sizes of condoms? True fact. That means that there are at least 57 different sizes of penises, ranging from "pudding snack cup" to "Rasputin wasn't a man". And still a large percentage of the male population think that they need that little extra push off the cliff. If you are the type of guy who is a little insecure about the size of his "baby's arm", nothing... more ›

Re-Viewed: Bobby Bare, Sr. & Bobby Bare, Jr.

Re-Viewed: Bobby Bare, Sr. & Bobby Bare, Jr.

At the Old Town School of Folk Music on Friday, Chicagoist saw Bobby Bare, Jr. & Sr. perform on the same stage. From the moment that Bobby Bare, Jr. entered the stage, kicked his shoes off, and started tuning the guitar we knew that we were in for some fun on Friday night. Bobby Bare, Jr. played solo for one song among a stage littered with instruments and then the band entered for a quick... more ›

Clusterfest Update: Pitchfork Gets Local

Clusterfest Update: Pitchfork Gets Local

In an effort to hype its Pitchfork Music Festival in Union Park this summer, organizers are tying themselves in to some already existing arts events in the city this summer. According to Pitchfork Media, the Chicago Cultural Center’s Lunchbreak series, in the weeklong run-up to the fest, will be devoted to bands handpicked by the owners and operators of several clubs affiliated with the League of Chicago Music Venues like Schuba’s, the Hideout, Metro, Martyr’s... more ›

Spring Is Bringing It!

Spring Is Bringing It!

Our favorite weatherman, Tom Skilling, who always had the mad skills when it comes to laying down an accurate weather forecast, tells us today by way of the Trib that along with our potential high of 70 degrees, the "wind gusts are to reach 30 m.p.h. at ground level." From boasting about getting the World's Fair 1893, to a headline in the Cleveland Gazette in 1885, there are many different references to Chicago as the... more ›

Grant Park Music Festival: Free Culture By the Bean

Grant Park Music Festival: Free Culture By the Bean

Not to be outdone by Ravinia, the Grant Park Music Festival has released their 2006 summer schedule. Bringing a nice mix of classical standards, contemporary orchestral favorites, and pop goodness to Millennium Park’s Pritzker Pavilion, the festival offers thrills comparable to their Highland Park cousins at much lower cost. The lawn and most pavilion seats are free. Make a reasonable donation to ensure that we cheapskates can continue to freeload, and the best seats are... more ›

Pony Up

Pony Up

By this point the whole fucking Valentine’s Day thing has been beaten to death. So we’re not going to say, “Oh boo-hoo, are you all alone tonight? Here’s a show to make you feel good.” No, we’re not. Instead we’re going to treat you like a bunch of grown-ups (well, most of you at least) and just clue you in to some rawkin’ live music this evening. As far as local groups go, The Ponys... more ›

Drake Hotel Set For Extreme Makeover: Ty Pennington to Stay Mercifully Absent

Drake Hotel Set For Extreme Makeover: Ty Pennington to Stay Mercifully Absent

The venerable old Drake Hotel, nestled in all its glory upon the northernmost reaches of Michigan Avenue, has long been the Chicago hotel equivalent of your loveable, old, slightly intimidating rich great aunt… you know, she used to be the belle of the ball and has hung out with royalty a few times, but is looking kinda haggard and just hasn’t been herself lately. Well, in a move that is essentially akin to giving that... more ›

Storms, Flooding & Tornados

Storms, Flooding & Tornados

Last week Chicagoist commented on the abundance of May showers that were predicted. Little did we know that we were in for a week or more of torrential lightening, thunder, hail and tornado-producing storms. On TV, all of the local stations have had a weather bug in the corner for days warning us of the danger of floods. The abundance of rain has caused many Illinois rivers to overflow. There has already been some flooding... more ›
