A few years back, we mentioned how the National Park Service and the Historic Landmarks Foundation of Indiana partnered with some dedicated individuals to save the "Homes of Tomorrow" designed and built for the 1933 Century of progress World Fair. These homes were part of an exhibit showcasing futuristic conveniences like central air conditioning and new building technologies and materials. At the fair's conclusion, the homes were floated by barge to Beverly Shores, Indiana where a developer planned to use the houses to start a community. That plan failed and the homes languished in disrepair. The partnership planned to save these houses and make them livable, by renting the homes for free -- in return for the residents renovating the houses.
A 1,600-gallon fish tank. Looney Toons murals. An underground log cabin. It can only be the former Lakeview mansion of R. Kelly and The Decider's Davie Wolinsky got a chance to tour it. If you have a spare couple of million dollars, look for the renovated mansion to go on sale sometime next year.
It's been said before around here: if you can't find anything good to eat in Pilsen, you aren't looking hard enough. On April 18, Adobo Grill Executive Chef Freddy Sanchez will lead a tour of some of the neighborhood's best and most popular places to nosh.
OK Go is hitting the road to preview songs from their new album, due this summer. Sadly they are only visiting the coasts and have obviously forgotten the city that gave them their start, allowed them to plaster their posters on ever available surface in Wicker Park, and attended their sweatbox Empty Bottle shows during the band's (relative) adolescence. Hmpf!
History buffs, Devil In The White City fans, and those in search of an atypical Sunday date, you can now take a virtual tour of the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition at the only remaining pavilion, The Museum of Science and Industry. The 90-minute tour, called "Blueprints to Our Past" is offered on select Sundays throughout the rest of the year, but you must order tickets in advance and groups are limited to twenty. Museum heads put the tour together in part due to the increased public interest thanks to Devil In The White City and worked with Lisa Snyder of the UCLA School of Architecture to recreate the fair based on old maps, blueprints, and photographs. The tour consists of walking in and outside of the museum as well as taking a virtual ride on an "electric-powered" gondola throughout the fair's canals.
There have been a lot of things said on this site about Taste of Chicago over the years. There are over 750,000 people who head downtown every year to sun, frolic and get their fill of giant turkey legs and corn on sticks. 'Course, that isn't all Taste of Chicago has to offer; even with Chicago Gourmet set to launch in September, Taste is still the food event for the everyman.
The biker who was hit by a car and killed over the weekend was Matthew Manger-Lynch, 29. He was racing in the Tour Da Chicago, an alleycat street race.

When Chicagoist was in high school, we knew that "Drug Free and Proud" banner hanging above the main entrance was a joke when we could smell the weed classmates had smoked at lunch.
For many, going out New Year's Eve can be like going to junior prom over and over again; it's lots of fussy build-up with little payoff, leaving you with nasty hangovers, tacky swag, and, possibly, an awkward goodbye come morning. If swanky soirées aren't your thing, head to The Old Town School of Folk Music for The Punch Brothers for a refreshing alternative.
Lucky enough to get a few days off for the Chrismukkah holidays? Several Chicago area music entities have been kind enough to give you time-filling options.
After a wildly successful run on Broadway that received 8 Tony nominations and 4 wins, including best musical, Jersey Boys toured the country before arriving in Chicago for a six-month stint down at The LaSalle Bank Theatre.

"One Mint Julep" seems to be a fitting theme for this week, in both photo and song (Last.fm doesn't lie). Let's move on, shall we? Today is "Charlie Trotter Day" in Chicago, in honor of the 20th anniversary of the opening of his eponymous restaurant. The Sun-Times had a couple of nice pieces this week in conjunction. We linked to Janet Fuller's story of Trotter's first two employees, who are still with him today, in...
Londonist are starting to think their city is getting just a little bit too expensive, when even Christian Slater can't afford to go out there. And there's no escaping, as local singer Lily Allen discovered when she was barred entry to the US. The British mapping agency caused further bad karma, by blocking a 3-D representation of London in Google Earth. But the smiles returned to Londonist's faces as they interviewed Baroness von Reichardt,...
If we were to describe this movie update post using song titles … In an email last week, long-time Chicago Filmmakers program director Patrick Friel announced he will be stepping down on August 10 to pursue other interests. He had been with Chicago Filmmakers for over eleven years. A replacement has not been announced yet. Also in his email was news that there will be opportunities to become involved with the programming of their weekly...

Back in the early ‘60s, a two-mile strip of low-income housing was completed on State between Pershing and 54th. That strip of 28 high-rises, dubbed the Robert Taylor Homes, would develop over the years into one of the most infamous housing projects of the city, if not the nation. Amid all the sensational stories of the violence, drug-dealing and poverty that surrounded the area, residents insisted the Taylor Homes were not the cesspool many believed...
It seems sort of cruel to make everyone get up so early tomorrow after a night rockin’ out to Spiderland, but we’re gonna give some reasons why it may be advisable to set that alarm and crawl out of bed for a few minutes to spend money. The Cure has been one of our favorites since we picked up that Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me album at the mall with our allowance money. We...

There are a lot of ways to make money playing poker on the World Poker Tour circuit. To do it successfully, you have to consistently play good poker. Occasionally, you can get a string of good luck, and sometimes you can get away with being aggressive and the master of the bluff. Poker personality Mike "The Mouth" Matusow and recent 2006 World Series of Poker Champion Jamie Gold are two prime examples of people who have mastered the latter. They are also two examples of people who can easily go on tilt at the poker table and can blow a huge stack of chips in a short amount of time.
Mini Ditka stole the Rembrandt. The park district has announced the "Tour Da Lakefront Bicycle Challenge" in which they invite you bike the 18-mile paved lakefront path in 3 hours or less. Great idea, but isn't this already the most congested area of the bicycle trail system? Ladyfest Chicago is a festival promoting women involved in arts and activism and takes place from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday, May 27, at the...

Parents, get ready for another summer of “Can We? Can We? Can We?? Can We?????” The Empire of the Mouse is bringing the first extended run of High School Musical, stage version, to the LaSalle Bank Theater. The runaway sensation of stage and screen lets elementary and middle school kids—and their parents—live vicariously through its characters, which in turn are living vicariously through the drama department.
We've already shared our thoughts with you about Fall Out Boy's new album. And, wise, prescient sages we are, we were correct in predicting the group's latest effort would be a monster sales-wise. So it's no surprise that the group has had to upgrade to a larger venue when they visit Chicago on June 10 and 11 at the Charter One Pavilion for The Honda Civic Tour.
Having plead guilty to probation violations last month stemming from his December arrest on guns charges, Bears defensive tackle Tank Johnson faced sentencing on Thursday. In a Skokie courtroom, Cook County Circuit Court Judge John Moran sentenced Johnson to 120 days in jail and fined him $2,500. Bears head coach Lovie Smith and Pro Bowl linebacker Brian Urlacher spoke on Johnson's behalf prior to sentencing. Imagine how long he'd be incarcerated if they hadn't! Speaking...
We don’t get excited about reunion tours. We’re above that. Unless of course it’s The Police, in which case we jump up and down clapping our hands like a school bus full of those girls Gwen Stefani pays to follow her around. We had been told that the revered (by us) group would be playing Soldier Field this summer as part of their 30th Anniversary / Cashin’ In / We’re In The R’N’R Hall O’...
