Remembering Dixie Square Mall

By Chuck Sudo in Arts & Entertainment on Feb 16, 2012 8:00PM

Yesterday's news about the demolition of Dixie Square Mall certainly didn't come as a surprise. The long abandoned shopping center has been slowly torn down for years. The town of Harvey promises to turn the site into new shopping or economic development have been touted almost as long as the mall has been abandoned.

As Dixie Mall has sat silent, it's become a favorite subject of historians and photographers, such as this 2009 set of photos Chicagoist Photos Flickr pool contributor Katherine Hodges, who tagged a few of them in the pool today. News of yesterday's absolutely final demolition had us wondering what happened to the Kickstarter campaign of U of C grad student and filmmaker Brett Tracy, who was the subject of this October 2010 post. Unfortunately, Tracy's Kickstarter campaign was unsuccessful. Hopefully, he and others are working to preserve the history of the mall.
