Weekend maintenance on the Grand Avenue Bridge revealed problems to the Bascule bridge that required immediate attention, so the bridge is now closed until Oct. 7 to vehicle, bicycle and pedestrian traffic..
The Chicago Department of Transportation planned to work on the bridge last weekend and next before the problems were revealed. The bridge was built in 1913 and last rehabbed in 1974. Automobile, bicycle and pedestrian traffic will detour around the bridge via Halsted Street, Chicago Avenue and LaSalle Street. Bus traffic will be rerouted via Halsted, Chicago and Kingsbury.
