Travel Guide Names Avondale To List Of Top 10 'Must-Visit' Neighborhoods In U.S.

Chicago is a city of neighborhoods, and depending on whom you ask, any of them could be the best. In recent years, Rogers Park has been named the best neighborhood in Chicago, Ukrainian Village was dubbed the hottest neighborhood in the U.S., and Bridgeport is leading in terms of home sales. And now, Avondale is claiming its place as one of the 10 "must-see" neighborhoods in the country.

That's according to Lonely Planet travel guide, which put together a guide to ten U.S. neighborhoods that are a bit under-the-radar, but deserve to be on travelers' bucket lists. As Lonely Planet correctly notes, Avondale offers little in the way of hotels and tourist attractions. But, they recommend visiting Red Apple Buffet for pierogis, Prop Thtr for art, and the Michelin-starred restaurant Parachute for trendy fine dining. Kuma's Corner and Honey Butter Fried Chicken are also there for more casual but still delicious meals.

"Get here soon though, because Avondale teeters on the edge. Hipster ‘hoods nibble at its borders, poised to spill over. And that may change its scruffy, artsy, lived-in magic," travel writing Karla Zimmerman warns. (Of course, as most stories of gentrification go, it already may be too late.)

Avondale joined East Liberty & Lawrenceville, Pittsburgh, Point Loma, San Diego, Frelard, Seattle, East Nashville, Nashville, Capitol Riverfront & Yards Park, D.C., Sunset Park, New York City, South 1st Street, Austin, Montavilla, Portland, and River North, Denver, on the full list.
