A Swiftly Tilting Planet

We're going to be losing 83 minutes of daylight in the next month. Jeebus. We've already lost about three hours of light since the days started getting shorter at the end of June, and we'll continue our descent into darkness until this year's winter solstice, which comes December 21. Perhaps those numbers make you notice we're losing more daylight this month than the previous three--you're right! Daylight, not near either pole, is a sinusoidal function. [WGN]

Woo hoo, Madeleine L'Engel references!!

I almost created the tag "madeleine l'engel allusions." Heh.

Right around the end of December when depression starts hitting hard, I remind myself every day that December 22 the days start getting LONGER!!! That little shred of hope in the form of minute by minute day by day light helps get me through every year.

Right now I can hear the cicadas and even though they are harbingers of summer's end, don't you just love that sound?

I leave chicago for at least two weeks in February, no matter what. I like to call it the wasted month.

..but in february they start gaining by like 300 seconds each day! that's the month I'm gearing up for.
