What's for Dinner? Butternut Squash Chili with White Cheddar Grilled Cheese and Jalepeno Rings
It's that time. The time when you want to curl up with something warm, maybe something spicy to clear out your sinuses, and eat everything in sight. Well, this dish is perfect for just that. Chili is incredibly seasonally appropriate, but we didn't think it could hurt to add some butternut squash and make it even more so. Dipping the grilled cheese in the chili is highly encouraged.

Staff Picks - Our Summer "Bucket List" of Food
As the weather today reminds us, summer is coming to an end. At the beginning of each summer, we make a list (in our case, a mental one, but we're willing to accept that some are more organized) of all the fabulous thing we want to do and eat before the summer ends. And then, suddenly, it's September and summer is just about over. If we try hard, there are a few more weeks of decent weather left for us to pack in the fun - and pack on the pounds. This is our checklist, our "bucket list" of summer food activities left to do.
Properly Sauced: Bluebird’s Kentucky Holler
Mix all ingredients in a tumbler glass and add ice cubes. To serve at a party, simply multiply all ingredients to fill a pitcher, mix and chill in the refrigerator ahead of time.
The Sweet Proliferation of Pumpkin!
When it comes to autumn fruit, the pumpkin is king. From the flickering grins of jack-o-lanterns on Halloween to the mouth-watering pumpkin pies that grace many a Thanksgiving table, the rotund squash is ubiquitous at this time of year. Not only is the pumpkin festive-looking and delicious to eat, but it is also healthy for our bodies and for our state's economy. Grab your carving knives folks, it's time to celebrate and Illinois is pumpkin central!
Do This: Chicago Downtown Farmstand's Birthday Party
October marks the second birthday of Chicago's Downtown Farmstand, one of our favorite under-appreciated gems. The farmstand is dedicated to selling only food produced within 250 miles of Chicago and stocks a great selection of goodies. This month, there will be tons of different local food events, tastings, conversations with local producers and special exclusive products only available in October.
Farmers Market Roundup - Labor Day Abundance
This past weekend, Green City Market was busier than we've ever seen it before, and with good reason. Fall produce has started to arrive, and the crowds devouring honeycrisp apples, squash, the first of the pumpkins and the last of the berries threatened to overwhelm the park and collapse in a (very tasty) heap.
Fall On Flickr
The cooler temps this week have us feeling the fall season here at the Chicagoist office, and some of our readers have caught some of that early fall feeling in pics in our Flickr Pool.
A&E Halloween-y Roundup
Happy First Day of Autumn! Fall makes us think of many things, with the most predominant being Halloween. We get easily excited about seasonal themes and events, so we made this list as much for our benefit as for yours, dear Readers. We might actually go to … all of these.
I Own a Castle In the Air
Highs will be climbing in to the 80s over the weekend, so even though the astronomical start of fall is Monday, we're getting summer-style weather. This stretch of sunshine can't change the fact that we've had an unusually cloudy September so far, with only 53 percent of the month's possible sun rather than the typical 63 percent. Still, we're looking at mostly sunny skies through at least Tuesday. [NWS, Accuweather, WGN]
A Swiftly Tilting Planet
We're going to be losing 83 minutes of daylight in the next month. Jeebus. We've already lost about three hours of light since the days started getting shorter at the end of June, and we'll continue our descent into darkness until this year's winter solstice, which comes December 21. Perhaps those numbers make you notice we're losing more daylight this month than the previous three--you're right! Daylight, not near either pole, is a sinusoidal function. [WGN]
Walk So Pure Between the Earth and the Sea
With a string of days this lovely, it's almost tough to believe this is the nation's most stressful city. More clear skies and highs in the 70s this week, which puts us about 6 degrees over the average temperature for this time of year. Enjoy it, cupcakes! Lord knows we are. [WGN, Accuweather, NWS]
Never Was a Cloudy Day
Warning: beautiful days ahead. This whole week should be sunny and clear with highs in the 70s. Overnight lows will dip into the 40s, though, so keep the extra blanket or a snuggle buddy handy. [Accuweather, NWS]
I Still See That Golden World
Is that...sunlight? Enjoy it. This has so far been the wettest September Chicago's ever had, Saturday set an all-time one-day rain record, and this is already the third wettest month on record. Luckily, we're looking at mostly clear skies this week, but there's still a flood warning for parts of our area. [Trib, NWS, Accuweather]
Tore Me All to Pieces, Nothing Else Remains
There's an 80 percent chance of rain this morning, and we're looking at showers, showers and more showers through the weekend. Next week, remnants of Hurricane Ike will make their way across the Midwest, so make sure your raincoat is in fighting form. There go our picnicking plans. Le sigh. [Accuweather, NWS]
Like a Leaf on the Breeze, You Blew Away
It's sunny and nice now, but we're looking at wet days ahead—and this has already been an unusually rainy September. Expect showers starting tonight and carrying on through some of the weekend, and there's a chance remains of Hurricane Ike will hit us next week. [Accuweather, NWS, WGN]
We Could Slip Away, Wouldn't That Be Better
We're looking at clear skies and comfortable temperatures today and tomorrow with stormclouds gathering tomorrow evening. This is a perfect time to start using Umbrella Today?, which will tell you if you, yes, need to bring an umbrella today. Yaaaaay. [NWS, Accuweather]
Falling In Love
Today's brisk temperatures are a sure sign that fall is almost here. At at the Chicagoist home offices, most of us are excited. Here's what we're most looking forward to before winter actually sets in:
We Danced Until the Night Became a Brand New Day
Ayee! It was crazy chilly this morning. Highs today should be in the mid-60s, but lows tonight could dip all the way into the—gasp!—40s. Time to bust out that extra blanket. Temperatures should rebound the rest of the week, though, with highs around 80 Thursday, Friday and Saturday. [NWS, Accuweather]
From the Dew-Soaked Hedge Creeps a Crawly Caterpillar
Sure, it's nice out now, but it's probably going to rain later and continue sprinkling throughout the evening. Highs today will be in the mid-60s, and lows tonight and the rest of this week will be dipping all the way into the 40s. Ayeee. [NWS, Accuweather]
High as a Mountain and Deep as a River
Yesterday's serious showers turned out to be the area's heaviest official rainfall in five years. Yowza! Areas of the city were hit with more than 4 inches of rain, which obliterates 2003's 3.2 inches on April 30/May 1,and Peoria, Rockford and Moline all saw record-level rainfall.
One Hasn't Got Time for the Waiting Game
We're looking at a chilly day today with rainy skies. The clouds and showers will continue on and off through Monday evening as the Midwest gets Gustav's last gasps. Today's highs will be in the mid-60s, but temps should climb tomorrow and this weekend back to the mid-70s, so don't make the switch from iced coffee back to regular hot coffee just yet. [Accuweather, NWS]
