The cooler temps this week have us feeling the fall season here at the Chicagoist office, and some of our readers have caught some of that early fall feeling in pics in our Flickr Pool.

Happy First Day of Autumn! Fall makes us think of many things, with the most predominant being Halloween. We get easily excited about seasonal themes and events, so we made this list as much for our benefit as for yours, dear Readers. We might actually go to … all of these.

Highs will be climbing in to the 80s over the weekend, so even though the astronomical start of fall is Monday, we're getting summer-style weather. This stretch of sunshine can't change the fact that we've had an unusually cloudy September so far, with only 53 percent of the month's possible sun rather than the typical 63 percent. Still, we're looking at mostly sunny skies through at least Tuesday. [NWS, Accuweather, WGN]

We're going to be losing 83 minutes of daylight in the next month. Jeebus. We've already lost about three hours of light since the days started getting shorter at the end of June, and we'll continue our descent into darkness until this year's winter solstice, which comes December 21. Perhaps those numbers make you notice we're losing more daylight this month than the previous three--you're right! Daylight, not near either pole, is a sinusoidal function. [WGN]

With a string of days this lovely, it's almost tough to believe this is the nation's most stressful city. More clear skies and highs in the 70s this week, which puts us about 6 degrees over the average temperature for this time of year. Enjoy it, cupcakes! Lord knows we are. [WGN, Accuweather, NWS]

Warning: beautiful days ahead. This whole week should be sunny and clear with highs in the 70s. Overnight lows will dip into the 40s, though, so keep the extra blanket or a snuggle buddy handy. [Accuweather, NWS]

Is that...sunlight? Enjoy it. This has so far been the wettest September Chicago's ever had, Saturday set an all-time one-day rain record, and this is already the third wettest month on record. Luckily, we're looking at mostly clear skies this week, but there's still a flood warning for parts of our area. [Trib, NWS, Accuweather]

There's an 80 percent chance of rain this morning, and we're looking at showers, showers and more showers through the weekend. Next week, remnants of Hurricane Ike will make their way across the Midwest, so make sure your raincoat is in fighting form. There go our picnicking plans. Le sigh. [Accuweather, NWS]

It's sunny and nice now, but we're looking at wet days ahead—and this has already been an unusually rainy September. Expect showers starting tonight and carrying on through some of the weekend, and there's a chance remains of Hurricane Ike will hit us next week. [Accuweather, NWS, WGN]

We're looking at clear skies and comfortable temperatures today and tomorrow with stormclouds gathering tomorrow evening. This is a perfect time to start using Umbrella Today?, which will tell you if you, yes, need to bring an umbrella today. Yaaaaay. [NWS, Accuweather]

Today's brisk temperatures are a sure sign that fall is almost here. At at the Chicagoist home offices, most of us are excited. Here's what we're most looking forward to before winter actually sets in:

Ayee! It was crazy chilly this morning. Highs today should be in the mid-60s, but lows tonight could dip all the way into the—gasp!—40s. Time to bust out that extra blanket. Temperatures should rebound the rest of the week, though, with highs around 80 Thursday, Friday and Saturday. [NWS, Accuweather]

Sure, it's nice out now, but it's probably going to rain later and continue sprinkling throughout the evening. Highs today will be in the mid-60s, and lows tonight and the rest of this week will be dipping all the way into the 40s. Ayeee. [NWS, Accuweather]

Yesterday's serious showers turned out to be the area's heaviest official rainfall in five years. Yowza! Areas of the city were hit with more than 4 inches of rain, which obliterates 2003's 3.2 inches on April 30/May 1,and Peoria, Rockford and Moline all saw record-level rainfall.

We're looking at a chilly day today with rainy skies. The clouds and showers will continue on and off through Monday evening as the Midwest gets Gustav's last gasps. Today's highs will be in the mid-60s, but temps should climb tomorrow and this weekend back to the mid-70s, so don't make the switch from iced coffee back to regular hot coffee just yet. [Accuweather, NWS]
