With yesterday's crazy, come-from-behind 12-inning victory over the Milwaukee Brewers, the Cubs have cut their magic number to just two. Two more wins by the Cubs, two more losses by the Brew Crew or a Cubs win and Brewers loss will hand the NL Central crown to the North Siders.
That means the Cubs could clinch their division tonight.
The Cubs play host to the St. Louis Cardinals this weekend, opening up the three-game series this afternoon at Wrigley. Should the Cubs win, they and their fans will then have to wait and see if the lowly Reds can outscore the flailing Brewers in Cincy this evening.
If you've got World Series hopes and all that's settled tonight is a guaranteed trip to the playoffs, do you still celebrate? With 100 years of history against 'em, the team and fans should party whenever they've got an excuse -- even if it's not "mission accomplished" for the ultimate goal just yet.
So if the Reds win, we can only begin to comprehend the amount of booze that'll be flowing in Wrigleyville tonight. The Cubs will have finished their game before first pitch in Cincinnati, so a champagne soiree in the Wrigley clubhouse seems unlikely. Does that mean the players will join the fans in the festivities along Clark Street tonight?

Odds are very good that the division will be wrapped up at home. Go Cubs!
I read elsewhere that the Cubs would be at a private party to watch the game together - I doubt you'll see any in the street tonight.
To the fans: act like you've been there (the firs round of the playoffs I mean, which you have). A few high fives and celebratory beers are OK. Save the madness for the world series. And PLEASE ignore the tv cameras that camp out in front of the ballpark tonight after the Brewers lose(?). Don't come running out of your house just to get on television. YOu look like idiots. Seriously.
Stealth: falling on deaf ears, i guarantee. as much as i love the Cubs, i'm very glad i don't live by Wrigley anymore.
If the first inning of today's game is an indication...
They may not be at home for the clincher.
Ouch
To the Fans: Enjoy it- don't listen to Stealth, he is classic kill-joy.
They may not be at home for the clincher.
Has that ever stopped the moron contingent of Cub fans from flocking to the TV cameras that descdend on Clark and Addison right after the last pitch?
Obligatory scenes: Newsperson getting jostled by drunk guys pushing their way toward the camera; scene inside a generic bar (more than likely the Cubby Bear or Bernie's) as the last out is made (after a montage of reaction shots capturing the high and lows of the game); people lining up the next day (or the day after) to buy playoff tickets.
To the fans: act like you've been there (the firs round of the playoffs I mean, which you have). A few high fives and celebratory beers are OK.
This is my favorite part of watching sports...fans. The emotion management, the attempts to contain all that pent up jock-love. It's like watching a gay kid from the bible belt hit the dance floor at Berlin for the first time. So much conflict!
The tension is terrible, I hope it lasts.
