Duck That Dino!

Yesterday we got a sneak peak at the Field Museum's latest addition: a 3D movie theater. Wearing the requisite glasses, we saw Dinosaurs Alive!, an educational film about bones more than dinosaurs. The film shows how bones are found, who looks for bones and, best of all, what the dinosaurs and their environs looked like.

Just because it's funny. Handpainted. $8.

If there's one upcoming event we here at Chicagoist unanimously want to nerd-out to, it's Walking With The Dinosaurs: The Live Experience, which opens tonight at the United Center. Based on a BBC Television show, this live 90-minute theatrical show with a $20 million dollar budget features life-sized dinosaurs (the tallest, a Brachiosaurus, being 36 feet tall and 56 feet long) in a simulated natural habitat. Realistic roars of dinosaurs, earthquakes, volcanoes, and comet crashes add to the spectacle, along with both live and recorded video.

  • More on Monday's Logan Square liquid attack: authorities believe the liquid may have contained sulfuric acid. They also possess a surveillance tape they hope will help identify the attackers.

The revamped American Gladiators airs another new episode tonight, but we're going to be too busy playing the old-school Nintendo version to watch. God, we still can't beat The Wall.

Need an original idea for a hot (read: nerdy) date or just an escape from the city this weekend that includes dinosaurs? The Walking with Dinosaurs exhibit won't be showing in Chicago, but it is open today through the 9th in Milwaukee at the Bradley Center. Tickets are a little pricey, $35-70, when you could just buy the DVD for less than $50 online and stay toasty at home, but really, how can you...

U of C paleontologist Paul Sereno unveiled his latest dino today: Nigersaurus taqueti, an elephant-sized sauropod with a highly unusual anatomy. Nigersaurus was a "Mesozoic cow," according to Sereno. It grazed. Also, its mouth was like a vacuum. We've all had those days, Nigersaurus. Don't feel too bad. Nigersaurus's weirdly-shaped skull had a broad, flat muzzle--to allow for ground-level grazing--and housed 50 rows of teeth, all up in the front. Sereno and co used...
