The Brotherhood Of Ghetto Division

Nestled in the Archer Heights neighborhood on the South Side of Chicago existed a musical mecca where legends gathered and the aspiring came to be enlightened. Hot Jams Records, also known as Pink Machine Studio, was an outpost whose patrons revealed as much about the history of Chicago House as the stacks of records they purchased. From the late '90s through as recently as 2007, Hot Jams filled a role far more significant that sales. For area youth like the Ghetto Division collective, the walls of Hot Jams were a safe haven of late nights, forged friendships and daily inspiration. A few years and countless memories later, Ghetto Division carry the torch of Hot Jams, a group of DJs and producers who challenge the norms of Chicago nightlife and champion the cause of original music making.

Interview: Wallace Shawn

"I suppose I should say that all my roots are all in Chicago," Wallace Shawn told us. "Both sides of my family. My parents were very identified with being from Chicago, really. My childhood memories of visiting the relatives in Chicago are central to my being. And all sorts of things that some people associate with New York, I associate with Chicago, like going to hear jazz. I went with my uncle to hear Erroll Garner in Chicago." Shawn is usually thought of as the quintessential New Yorker (in fact his father William was the long-time editor of The New Yorker) but his new book is published by Chicago-based Haymarket Press. Essays is Shawn's first all-nonfiction collection, with pieces about the theater and writing, and impressions of living in post-9/11 America.

Interview: Filmmaker Stephen Cone

Chicago isn't just a great place to see movies. It's also a great place to be an independent filmmaker. Young filmmakers Joe Swanberg and Andrew Bujalski have a direct honesty at the center of their work; Stephen Cone's films are equally sincere while exploring more unconventional subject matter. The Christians, which enjoyed successful runs at the Siskel, is centered on a small group of devout believers holed up in a Chicago apartment, convinced that the Rapture is imminent. His short Young Wives played at the 2007 LA Shorts Fest. Cone is about to start shooting his next project, In Memoriam: A Comedy. We talked with him about the themes of his work and what it's like to make films in Chicago.

Adventures in Blago-sitting: Inherit The Windbag

Tomorrow at high noon in Springfield, Governor Rod Blagojevich's impeachment trial will get underway but the Governor will be nowhere near the State Capitol. Instead, he'll be making the media rounds, hitting up talk shows, a move that cost him the services of superstar defense attorney Ed Genson. At least one local network (ABC 7) has said they'll stream the events in Springfield live tomorrow and suspect more will join. But what of the interviews? If you're close to a TV and what some unintentional comedy to get your week started, you can catch Blago on the following programs:

It's the new year and Chicagoist has been busy making some resolutions. Along with promising to lose ten pounds from our ass and drink a little less (at least around our parents), Chicagoist wants to expand its content. In addition to talking about what's going on in the news, we want to spend 2006 telling you more about the best things in Chicago. And we want your help!

It's been a while since since our last call for contributors and Chicagoist is getting antsy to ramp up staff and improve the site even more. Areas that we really want to concentrate on are Interviews, Food and Drink, and Arts and Entertainment. Specific positions are listed below. If you're interested in any of them, meet the qualifications, and would like to join the Chicagoist team, email chicagoistapply(at)gmail(dot)com with the position in the subject line. In the email let us know a bit about yourself and why you'd like to join us.
