"Daybreak Bandit" Suspect in Custody

Yesterday, it appeared as if the robber known as "The Daybreak Bandit" had struck again, this time hitting a Harris Bank in Joliet at around 7 a.m. The man hid behind a dumpster and when an employee arrived to open the bank, he told the employee he was armed and forced them to open the bank. Today, local FBI officials confirmed that a suspect in the robbery was in custody along with an accomplice, though no charges have been filed. "The Daybreak Bandit" earned his nickname because he chose to rob banks in the early morning when workers were just arriving. The bandit's suspected of other robberies in Plainfield, Romeoville and Hinsdale and a $20,000 reward had been offered for his capture. [Daily Herald, Fox Chicago]

The robber "was described as Hispanic, about 5-foot-7, 200 pounds and wearing a light green hoodie under a black puffy jacket, blue jeans and white gym shoes." No one was hurt in the incident.

  • Bad news from WBEZ - a budget shortfall has resulted in layoffs of nine percent of its workforce.

  • An Oak Lawn man arrested after robbing a Burbank bank may be the "Playboy Bandit" that authorities have been hunting. Edward Guajardo, 48, is charged in a robbery Tuesday afternoon. After making off with over $6,000 in cash, Guajardo and two other men fled in a car and a high-speed chase ensued. It ended when Guajardo's car crashed into Chicago police car at 63rd Street and Cicero Avenue. All three men were taken into custody but only Guajardo has been charged.

Though not yet charged with any other holdups, Guajardo appears to be the heavyset man who robbed two other banks, including a Charter One branch in Alsip Sept. 11, the FBI said.

Did crime take a holiday to celebrate the home town senator's election? Nope. Among some of the criminal mischief going on about town:

  • CBS 2 spent some time with anxious Chicago investors after Monday's bailout rejection by Congress.

  • Shon Williams, former University of Miami lineman and 1986 Sun-Times All-Chicago Area team member for King High School, was fired from his job as a football coach from DuSable High after being arrested in connection with a weekend bank robbery that led to a high-speed chase and a crash leaving one policeman injured. Aside from being fired, Williams was also, "pulled from his post as a community service representative at the school and reassigned to an area office, pending disciplinary action." Williams and 35-year-old Benyusef Hicks have been charged with a holding up a Buffalo Grove bank and making off with almost $12,000. A high-speed chase ensued but abruptly ended when the get-away car crashed into a Chicago policeman's car. The officer is in stable condition.

The Hershey's store on the Magnificent Mile was robbed by two men, at least one of whom was armed, on Thursday night. The incident occurred just after 10:30 p.m. Two employees were in the store at the time but neither was harmed during the robbery. An undetermined amount of cash was taken and police don't have detailed descriptions of either robber. Though chances are they're the ones wandering around with pockets full of Hershey Kisses.

Ten-Second Bandit: It's more than just your high school nickname. In fact, it's the FBI's moniker for two different area bank robbers, one of whom is in prison. The other, current 10SB has been holding up local banks, demanding money within...well, you know.

Williams was not accused of shooting Cisse, and he's the third person charged with crimes from that night.

The City's already poured $2 million into a park in Bronzeville, but now Alderman Pat Dowell and Mayor Daley want to sell the property. Ex-alderman Dorothy Tillman is not pleased. Chicago's lone Wal-Mart paid more than $5 million in state and local taxes during its first year, including $1.3 million to the City and $400,000 to Cook County. That means the store brought in between $55 and $60 million for the year, which is...

Aurora's Planned Parenthood can open immediately. How bad do things have to get before Daley will denounce what's going on with the Chicago Police Department's Special Operations Section? Even the Associated Press is saying, "Not since club-swinging cops in baby-blue helmets chased demonstrators through clouds of pepper gas at the 1968 Democratic National Convention have Chicago police been so awash in trouble." Dayum. And yet Da Mare has given no indication that he'll disband...

The Special Operations Section of the Chicago PD has yet another scandal on its hands: An unconstitutional sweep of a bar on March 27, 2004, was caught on video, and the officers' story does not, in any way, match what's on the tape, which is now in the hands of the Tribune. News of this perversion of the social contract comes as part of the bigger take-down of the SOS cops' style of protecting and...
