Man Charged With Making, Selling Fake Driver's Licenses

Paul H. Schniedermeir, 26, of the 2100 block of North Milwaukee, has been charged with possession and manufacture of fraudulent driver's licenses, as well as drug charges, after police discovered evidence that he made at least 35 fake licenses in the past two weeks and sold them for $100 each. Police suspect that Schniedermeir may have sold hundreds of licenses to Chicago and suburban teens for the purpose of buying alcohol. At least 30 people have come forward and turned in their fake licenses, which were purchased at a Northwest Side storefront, Wilmette police revealed to the Chicago Sun-Times on Friday. Police have urged others with fake IDs to turn them in as well and noted that anyone who did so would not face charges. more ›

The 'Burbs Battle Red Light Cameras

The 'Burbs Battle Red Light Cameras

In the wake of yesterday's story on accident statistics at red light camera intersections in the city comes another red light camera story, this one in Schaumburg. It seems the village is none-too-pleased about the ordinance passed last week by the Cook County Board, approving a new slew of RLCs to go in at 30 intersections in the Cook County suburbs and now they're fighting back. Last night, the village board passed an ordinance requiring their approval before any RLCs are installed in the village. But Schaumburg isn't the only suburb fighting the new cameras: Arlington Heights, Buffalo Grove, Wilmette, and Bartlett are all taking umbrage with the new cameras and exploring the legality of the board's actions. more ›

Buying Power of The South Side Overlooked

Buying Power of The South Side Overlooked

During an interview with Chicago Public Radio, North Kenwood resident Lauren McCadney says she chose to live in the South Side neighborhood because of its parks and affordability - but to shop for groceries or other household items, she has to get in her car and make a “destination trip” to a Dominick’s or Target. McCadney says she spends between $500-$700 a month for groceries, dining out, and trips to Target, money spent outside her community which she believes could ultimately support the business. more ›

Free Baha'i Choral Festival This Sunday

Memorial Day weekend, while truly a blessing, can also be a burden on an aging body no longer impregnable to bun-embraced offal and canned beer. Sunday morning offers a peaceful, spiritual intermission as the third annual Baha'i Choral Festival comes to the Baha'i House of Worship in Wilmette. more ›

Wilmette Shaken By Murder-Suicide

The town of Wilmette was shaken yesterday when a man killed his wife, her son, and then himself. Bogus Benjamins Circulating On The North Shore

Bogus Benjamins Circulating On The North Shore

Up in Wilmette, where apparently $100 bills are passed around like the clap, local businesses are on the lookout for fakes. Since Sunday there have been two instances of counterfeit bills being intercepted from restaurant patrons, both of whom seemed to have no idea their cash was phony. Police were called in both cases, but no word yet on whether just the one bill is terrorizing the neighborhood, or if it’s a full-blown epidemic. Store clerks have been instructed to hold $100 bills up to a light and check for security markings to determine authenticity. [Trib] more ›
