The efforts to identify eight John Doe victims of infamous serial killer John Wayne Gacy continues to show positive returns. Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart announced that DNA evidence identified one of the victims who went unnamed for over 30 years.
The family of William George Bundy finally have closure after DNA samples they provided to Dart's office matched samples extracted from the unidentified remains earlier this year. Bundy's sister, Laura O'Leary, told media at a news conference this morning, "I always knew he was going to be one of them. But there was no DNA back then, so there was nothing I could really do."
Bundy was reported missing in October 1976. At the time of his disappearance, Bundy said he was going to a party, but left his wallet at home. He dropped out of high school as a junior and worked in construction.
Nearly 125 families have contacted Dart's office since he announced the exhumation of the unidentified victims in October. DNA evidence was used to locate a presumed victim of Gacy's in Florida in late October. A Cook County judge granted a separate exhumation request by another family of a Gacy victim to definitively determine if their son was one of the 33 boys and young men killed by Gacy between 1972 and 1978.
John Wayne Gacy was executed in 1994. His attorney, Sam Amirante, has long insisted there was a 34th victim who was never found. DNA tests on the other seven remains are pending.
