After reading two painful tales of dog abuse in the last few days, it's good to see Illinois does a pretty good job of keeping its pets safe. The Animal Legal Defense Fund ranked Illinois as one of the states with the most progressive animal protection laws, including requiring veterinarians to report cruelty. The Associated Press writes:
The animal rights group says Illinois has felony penalties for cruelty, neglect, fighting, abandonment and sexual assault of animals. The state has enhanced penalties for repeat abusers, and its main legal protections apply to most animals.
Nearby Michigan also topped the list, while Iowa was listed among the worst.
