CTA Shooting Suspect Charged With Murder

2008_10_10_kiyanna.jpgMilton Wardlaw, the young man who turned himself in to authorities in connection to the shooting of 17-year-old Kiyanna Salters aboard a CTA bus Sunday, has officially been charged with first-degree murder and aggravated discharge of a firearm into an occupied vehicle. Wardlaw will attend a bail hearing today. He has previous convictions for drugs and weapons charges, and, while admitting he was on the bus and involved in an argument with another passenger, has claimed he was unarmed and did none of the shooting.

While planning Kiyanna's funeral, some of her family members expressed their gratitude to Wardlaw's mother who had previously issued a plea for Milton to turn himself in after recognizing him on the CTA surveillance footage. Relative Sonja Nelson-Wilcox said, "I'm glad they put it out there like they did. I know it was hard but sometimes you have to show tough love in order for these kids to do right. By her showing tough love, he did the right thing.''

Umm, I'm gonna call it right now and say this gets pled to 2nd degree murder and he serves less then 10 years. CASE CLOSED.

Probably right Jenny. Random shooting into a bus (are we also sure there were no shots OUT of the bus?)... second degree.

The sad part about this is, even if he does serve less than 10 years, he's going to come out of prison an angry probably more violent young man.

Can we get some rehabilitation in our prison systems? Wouldn't it behoove society to have prisoners come back into the world as productive citizens rather than recidivist and angry?

Actually he'll come out of prison in his mid-30s to early 40s. As statistics show, people at this age rarely return to a violent lifestyle.

"people at this age rarely return to a violent lifestyle."

as oppossed to a life of nonviolent crime?

Is anyone even going to bother looking for the other guy involved?
