Back of the Yards and Canaryville residents needing another reason to head to Amelia's: the City Department of Public Health shut down Taco Don Cuco (1847 W. 47th St.) today after a spot inspection found a broken refrigerator, food stored at unsafe temperatures, and evidence of a rodent infestation. That evidence included a carcass on a glue trap.

Ukrainian Village residents are going to have to get their tacos from somewhere else today. The City Department of Public Health shut down Tecalitlan (1814 W. Chicago Ave.) after a spot inspection found four coolers at temperatures ranging from 48-62 degrees. the Health department also made Tecalitlan throw out 400 pounds of meat, eggs and other ingredients.

Word from Bleeding Heart Bakery is that they just passed their requested Health Department reinspection with flying colors and will be open for business by the time you read this. To commemorate the drama, Owner Michelle Garcia will be offering a "kitchen sink" cookie special for the weekend.

Bleeding Heart Bakery Does Damage Control

Yesterday we received an e-mail from the City Department of Public Health announcing the closing of Bleeding Heart Bakery for some health code violations. Rather than go into hysterics, we called the bakery, asked to speak with owner Michelle Garcia and, when told she wasn't available, left our number and asked that she call us back regarding the inspection. After all, the prudent thing in these matters is to get both sides of the story. So we decided to sit on the story until we heard back from Garcia.

From the City Department of Public Health: Earwax Café (1561 N. Milwaukee) in Wicker Park failed a follow-up inspection today after a spot inspection last week showed traces of a rat infestation.

The Health Department shut down another Bar Louie yesterday, this time at 741 W. Randolph (a press release from Tim Hadac at the CDPH says that it's still shut down as of post time). The major violation was the discovery of over 1,000 rat droppings in a basement storage area. Inspectors also found doors with gaps allowing insects and rodents easy access, fruit flies, overflowing dumpsters, no hot water and no sanitation solution in an automatic dishwashing machine.

Want to know how detailed a city health inspection of Our Town's restaurants can become? Tribune reporter Monica Eng recently followed two Public Health Inspectors around as they scared the hell out of unsuspecting restaurant owners with spot inspections. How detailed are the inspectors?

The City Health Department, acting on a 311 tip of no running water, shut down Hearty Boys Catering today after finding a list of violations, including no hot or cold running water on the premises, a broken walk-in cooler that was failing to hold food at 40 degrees or colder — the cooler was no colder than 57 degrees — and food in the cooler at similarly unsafe temperatures (including cooked pasta, hot dogs and other food). We've placed a call to Hearty Boys co-founder Dan Smith for comment and will update if and when he returns the call.

That last tidbit we wrote in our earlier post about Fulton's on the River being open for lunch tomorrow? We were wrong. They're open for dinner right now. The Health Department gave Fulton's the go-ahead to re-open, saying the restaurant passed its re-inspection "with not even a minor food safety violation noted."

This summer may have been pleasant, but there are still fruit flies out there. Fruit fly infestations, among other violations, led to the closings of Flat Top Grill's Old Town location (319 W. North Ave.) and Gum Fung Restaurant in Marquette Park (6835 S. Pulaski). Both restaurants also had food stored at unsafe temperatures; inspectors found 20 pounds of bok choy and other vegetables found in open containers on the floor at Gum Fung.

First it was the advanced civilization found in O'Hare Airport. Then the North Avenue Whole Foods was shut down because of them, sending shoppers into a mild panic and showing that some of Our Town's better newspaper columnists has as loose a grasp on the definition of "irony" as Alanis Morissette.

The City Health Department shut down the Whole Foods at 1000 W. North Ave. today after finding evidence of a rodent infestation throughout the store, including a glue trap and over 100 droppings in a walk-in cooler. The store will remain closed until it passes reinspection; make sure to shop at one of the 400 other Whole Foods in the city.
