While the new location may look like just a coffee bar, it's a front. A front for the headquarters of the entire Meinl pastry operation. We went behind the scenes.
Julius Meinl Opens A New Sweet Spot In Ravenswood
Chicago Home To Greenest Home in America
Recently featured in Mashable's list of eight amazing green buildings, the Michael Yarnell residence in Ravenswood is the highest scoring LEED building ever built.
Behind the Scenes at Metropolitan Brewing
It's getting hard to find a good bar in town that isn't pouring Metropolitan beers. So we jumped at the chance to see the spot cranking out all that Krankshaft.
First Look - Amy's Candy Bar
We're suckers (no pun intended) for a good candy shop. Which is why when we saw the sidewalk sandwich board for Amy's Candy Bar when wandering around Ravenswood (text: Keep Calm and Have More Candy) we pestered our companion until we got to stop. What can we say? Something about candy stores make us act like children.
Local Whiskey Brand Hitting Stores In November
It has taken 90 years, but a boutique Chicago distillery is finally bringing back Chicago's whiskey distilling trade, which was abolished by prohibition. Distilled at Koval Distillery in Ravenswood, Lion's Pride Organic Whiskey, is due to reach stores in Chicago on November 6, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. Named for Lion Birnecker, the son of Koval's owners Sonat and Robert Birnecker, Lion's Pride will come in four flavors--rye, oat, dark rye, and dark oat. The whiskey joins a line-up of vodka, liqueurs, and other spirits from the Birneckers' distillery.
Nevermore
Rock and roll is coming to Ravenswood, and the children of the neighborhood will be the beneficiaries of this sleepy area’s wake up call. The Raven, an indie rock-heavy weekend festival, invades Chase Park August 16 and 17 with all proceeds going to the renovation and expansion of the park’s playground.
Wachowski Brothers' Ninja Assassin Being Cut in Ravenswood
Frankly we don't know anyone who saw Speed Racer, the Wachowski Brothers' computer candy summer flick. Did anyone? The would-be Tron for a new generation has been a big hurt for the filmmakers behind The Matrix: according to boxofficemojo the movie has grossed only $43 million to date despite a production budget of $120 million.
Come Sale Away
], but that doesn’t mean we’re not into stretching a buck. We found a few shopping events going on this weekend that are a bargain-hunter's paradise.
One Great Sandwich: First Slice's Chicago-Style Vegetarian
When this Chicagoist writer left a job in Ravenswood late last year, we knew we'd miss our officemates dearly. We also lamented the fact we'd no longer be within walking distance to First Slice Cafe for lunch. The cafe, located on the first floor of the Lillstreet Art Center, is home to a small menu of fine creations, one of our favorites being the Chicago-Style vegetarian sandwich.
Montrose Water Main Breaks, Street Caves In
Today would be an excellent day to take the CTA, if you happen to be planning on driving anywhere from, or to, Lincoln Square or Ravenswood. A water main broke on Montrose under the Montrose Brown Line stop at 1:30 a.m. (or 12:30, if you like to believe the Sun-Times) last night, causing an enormous part of the street to collapse in, and partially submerging several cars. Also causing water to run down Montrose and Wolcott. Also causing the snow from last night to turn into a disgusting brown sludge that runs from Damen past Ravenswood. The street, obviously, is closed for the time being, as workmen attempt to fill the hole with sand.
